Caring for Your Child

It is important for you to act as your child's advocate during their cancer treatments. Ask your radiation oncologist, or any member of the treatment team, any questions you may have.

Questions to ask your team can include:

• Why is this diagnostic test being done?
• What are the benefits and risks of performing this diagnostic test?
• What are the treatment options?
• What are the benefits and risks of having this treatment?
• What will my child experience during this treatment?
• What is our life going to look like (ex., number of visits, types of visits)?
• What can be done to prepare my child for this treatment?
• What are the potential short-term and long-term treatment side effects?
• What can be done to reduce the treatment side effects?
• Who can I contact if I have questions or concerns during the treatment?
• How will the cancer be monitored after treatment?
• What are the chances the cancer can come back after treatment?
• What can be done if the cancer comes back after treatment?
• What kind of follow-up should my child have with your team?
• Who should my child see for long-term follow-up?
